Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna range, producing a high-desert landscape closer to the Tibetan plateau than the rest of Nepal. The restricted region is reached via Jomsom and centers on Lo Manthang, a walled medieval capital with centuries-old monasteries and cave complexes still being studied by archaeologists.
