Discover the cultural heart of Nepal with a journey through Kathmandu Valley’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient temples,…
The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into one of Nepal’s most fascinating and culturally preserved Himalayan regions. Often described as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” Upper Mustang lies in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and offers a landscape unlike anywhere else in Nepal, with barren cliffs, deep canyons, colorful rock formations, and traditional Tibetan-style villages.
The trek begins in the historic city of Kathmandu before flying to Pokhara and then continuing toward Jomsom. From there, the trail follows the ancient Kali Gandaki corridor through villages such as Kagbeni, Chele, Ghami, and Tsarang before reaching Lo Manthang, the cultural heart of Upper Mustang.
Lo Manthang is famous for its ancient monasteries, whitewashed buildings, narrow lanes, and historic royal palace. Along the route, trekkers can explore centuries-old Buddhist monasteries, caves carved into cliffs, prayer walls, and traditional villages that have preserved their Tibetan cultural heritage for generations.
The trek also offers spectacular views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and other Himalayan peaks. The dry, windswept terrain creates a remarkable contrast to the lush valleys found elsewhere in Nepal, making the Upper Mustang Trek an exceptional combination of adventure, culture, history, and natural beauty.
